Vikings send nine to state track meet

North Branch will be well represented at the 2002 State Track Meet this weekend, as nine athletes advanced to the tournament with first and second place showings at the section finals.

The Vikes will be competing in 11 different events at the state tourney, after capturing five first place finishes and six second place finishes at the section finals May 29 and June 1 at Cambridge.

For the girls, Kelly Lines advanced with second in the 100m dash and second in the long jump. She will also anchor the 4x100 relay team and 4x200 relay team at state. Both relay teams took first place.

Also on the 4x100 relay are Kaity Vichorek, Jill Vanden Heuvel and Michelle Vonderharr. Vichorek and Vonderharr join Lines on the 4x200 relay team, as well as Rauna Dallman.

Other individual qualifiers were Erin Shodahl, second in discus, Dallman, first in high jump, Reggie Grams, second in 300m hurdles and Joe Remitz, first in shot put and second in discus.

Sheena Devine captured first place in the shot put and rounds out the state competitors for the Vikes. Her throw of 42í7.5î also set a new school record.

Collectively, the girls team was second at the section finals and the boys team took third. Head coach Brian Hasleiet said it was the teamís highest finishes at sections since he has coached.

The State Track Meet begins with preliminaries and some finals Fri., June 7, with the rest of the final events wrapping up Sat., June 8. Competing in the AA bracket, the Vikes begin with events at 9:30 a.m.
