Rush City girls take fourth at first track meet in St. CloudBy Barbara Brown The Rush City High School girls track team took fourth place in the opening meet of the season. The Tigers scored 63 points. Hinckley-Finlayson landed first with 118, Mille Lacs took second with 101 and Braham was third with 72. Rush City beat Aitkin, at 34, and East Central, which scored 19. Sophomore Kayla Witte and freshman Christine Frandsen set the pace for the rest of the pack when they took the track for the 1600 meter run. Witte and Frandsen were unstoppable ñ and couldnít be caught ñ from the start of the race through the finish. Witte took first, finishing the race in 6:01. Frandsen followed close behind, finishing in 6:05. The meet opened with the girls 55 meter hurdles. Sophomore Gabby Calander took fifth and junior Tamara Saxton landed sixth. ìThe girls look pretty strong for the first meet of the year,î said head coach Mike Vaughn. Sophomore Cherie Schmischney took home fifth place honors in the 55-meter dash, finishing at 8.43 seconds. In the 400-metern dash, eigth-graders Healther Dean and Brianna Launderville placed. Dean took fourth with 1:13 and Launderville secured sixth with 1:16. Britta Johnson, a junior, jumped into fifth place during the long jump competition. She landed 15 feet, two and three-quarters inches from the jumping point. In relay events, the medley team of Ashley Sader, Calander, Schmischney and Christine Moore brought in second, finishing the race at 2:11 just 1.3 seconds after the number one Ogilvie team. The four-by-200 team of Schmischney, Saxton, Launderville and Dean took fourth, coming in at 2:10. The four-by-100 team was fifth at 100.16 seconds. That relay team was Sader, Calander, Schmischney and Moore. Elise Johnson took fourth in shot put with 26 feet, two inches. The teamís record is now 2-3 after the first meet. The next meet will be April 2 at Ogilvie and the Tigers will then host a meet at their home track on April 4. ©ECM Post Review |
