Villella, Holmgren look strong at state tourney

Although they didnít place, Josh Villella and Jeff Holmgren represented their team and school well at the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament last weekend in St. Paul.

Viking Jeff Holmgren, a freshman, lost in the opening round of the 103 pound. bracket.
He faced Adam Schlee from Grand-Meadow Leroy Ostrander/Kingsland.

Schlee scored a takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead.

Holmgren controlled much of the rest of the match, but was unable to score.

Schlee turned Holmgren twice in the waning seconds of the third, for a 7-0 win.

Holmgren finishes his successful season with 29 wins, and set the school pin record at NBHS.

Villella, a 140 pound. sophomore, wrestled in his second state tourney.

He faced last yearís runner-up at 140 pounds., Mitch Bunne of GMLOK.

Villella was able to gain the first takedown, but gave up a reversal at the end of the first period.
After giving up an escape in the second, Villella was down 3-2 going into the final period.

He chose the down position and was turned to his back, falling behind 5-2, and ending the scoring.

Villella also ends a fine season, with 31 wins and giving up only two takedowns all season.

ìThese two young men represented their school and community proudly and worked hard to get to the state tournament,î said North Branch head coach Tony Aho.
