Questions raised over Stacyís Friday night meeting

By Barbara Brown

A questionable closed meeting last Friday night once again pushed back the timetable for building a new Stacy-Lent area fire station.

The Stacy City Council called a special meeting last Friday for 5 p.m. to discuss the conditional use permit granted to Lent Township for land it owns within the city limits and for a building permit request by Lent.

The township plans to build a new fire station on the land and has been working with the city to create a joint operational and purchase agreement.

At the start of Friday nightís meeting, city attorney Peter Grundhoeffer suggested that the council convene a closed meeting to discuss rumors of potential litigation that could have stemmed from the councilís decisions at the meeting.

When the council came out of the meeting, the group voted to send the building plans back to the city planning commission, which had not made a recommendation as expected at its Feb. 19 meeting for lack of a quorum.

The council agreed to ask the planning commission to hold a special public hearing on March 19 and the council would convene immediately after to decide the conditional use and building permitsí fates.

According to Lent Township supervisor Monica Abress, the township may appeal the councilís decision, claiming it was made after an illegal closed meeting was held.

Abress said the township also plans to question the legality of the time and date of the meeting.
Public meetings are required to be posted for a number of days before the meetings can be held legally.

Abress said Lent Township had two days notice for the March 1 meeting and that questions were raised among township supervisors if the notice has to be out for two days or three days.
