Everett L. Baker

Everett Loren Baker, 72, of Pine City, died on Monday, May 8, 2002 at Kanabec Hospital in Mora. He had been ill with cancer.
He was born on Oct. 26, 1928 in East Bethel, Minn., the son of Less and Iris (Mayberry) Baker.
He attended Linwood School and Forest Lake High School.
On Nov. 28, 1945, at a young age, Everett enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a paratrooper with the 711th Airborne Ordinance Co. He was stationed in Maryland, Hawaii and Japan. He was discharged on April 21, 1947 and came back to Minnesota.
Everett began working for Scott-Attwater Manufacturing Company and later, in 1963, became one of the first employees of Atscott Mfg. He worked there until his retirement in March 1994.
On March 26, 1973, Everett married Lorna at the Little Brown Church of the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Pine City.
Everett was a member of the Pine County Fair Board for 25 years. His main responsibility was running the demolition derby during the fair. He was also involved with winter storage at the fairgrounds. He thoroughly enjoyed the people he worked with on the fair board.
After his retirement from Atscott, Everett campaigned and was elected to the East Central Energy Board of Directors. He was serving his third term at the time of his death. He also enjoyed working with his fellow bard members and with ECE, feeling he was able to make a difference for ECE customers.
Motorcycles played a big part in Everettís life. His pride and joy was his 1968 Electra-Glide Harley Davidson. He and Lorna took several trips on the motorcycle.
Everett was also a member of the Novak-Milliren VFW Post 4258 and Heath-Perkins american Legion Post 51, both of Pine City.
He is survived by his wife, Lorna, a son, Michael Ovik, and his wife, Vicki, Pine City; daughters, Deborah Etienne, and her husband, Jeff, of Richfield; Tammy Nordahl and her husband, Rick, of Pine City; grandchildren, Mickey and fiance Emily Armstrong, Colee, Kati and Chance Ovik, Caitlin and Jared Etienne, Josh and Callie Nordahl, great-grandson, Tate Evan Ovik, sister, Evelyn Lindh of St. Francis; sisters-in-law, Ila Baker and Lorraine Baker, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Everett was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harold, Marvin and Virgil Baker.
A memorial service was held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on Thursday, May 9. The Rev. Vicki VanderVegt officiated.
Honorary urn bearers were Allan Bomstad, Troy Bomstad, LeRoy Baker, Larry Baker, Loren Baker, Russ Lindh and David Baker.
Military rites were provided by the Novak Milliren VFW Post 4258 and Heath Perkins American Legion Post 51.
