Regional treatment plant discussions are underway

By Barbara Brown

Communities in southern Chisago County are trying to work out a plan for a regional wastewater treatment plant.

Officials from Chisago County, Wyoming, Stacy, Chisago, Center City, Shafer, Lindstrom, Wyoming Township and Chisago Lakes Township are meeting monthly to talk about the possibility of building one central wastewater treatment plant as opposed to continuing to upgrade and expand current community plants.

The group met at Chisago City Hall on May 1 and left the meeting believing the plant may be a pipe dream until the cities could come up with financing.

Although numbers are very preliminary, said Chuck Janski with the engineering and architecture firm of Bonestroo and Assoc., cost for the plant could climb into the $10 million range.

The group is holding discussions now to see if the plant would be feasible and efficient.

Life expectancy of one central plant could be designed between 20 and 40 years, Janski said. Members are investigating whether one central plant with a higher capacity and high-tech filtering and discharge system might be more effective and efficient than several plants in the area, Janski said.

No design or engineering work has been done on the idea.

ìThis may not even happen,î he said. ìWeíre all in the very early stages of discussion here.î

A meeting with Wyoming officials for more discussion was expected May 14 and a meeting with Stacy officials will be set as well. The group as a whole is expected to meet again in June.
