Vikes down two conference foesNorth Branch 10 Mora 0 The Vikings softball squad chalked up two more conference wins last week, shutting out Mora Tuesday and downing Foley Thursday. Senior Jamie Schlagel gave up only one hit in an impressive 10-0, five inning shutout at home against Mora. She racked up eight strikeouts while facing only 16 batters, and allowing just one hit. The Mustangs struggled against the speed of Schlagelís pitches, as she caught them off guard with her fast ball and curve ball. North Branch jumped to an early lead, with two runs in the first that began with a triple from senior Errin Koehler. The Vikes picked up three more in the second off a double from junior Traci Reimann, a single from Schlagel, and back-to-back singles from sophomore Lisa Weinhold and junior Brooke Beaver. After increasing their lead to 6-0 in the third, North Branch ended the game with four runs in the fifth. After Alison Trampe reached first, she was driven in on a Reimann triple to deep left field. Reimann scored on a single from senior Kate Sykes, who advanced on Schlagelís single and was driven home on a ground out by junior Heather Peterson to end the game. For the game, the Vikes notched 10 hits. Reimann led the cause going two for two. Koehler and Schlagel also picked up two hits each. North Branch 12 Foley 2 The team went on to down the Falcons in five innings at home Thursday. Again, the Vikes jumped out to a quick lead, with three runs in the first. They came off singles from Koehler, Reimann and Sykes. In the second, they exploded with six runs. Koehler drove in two runs on a double, and triples from Sykes and junior Sarah Rauen scored two more. They increased their lead to 10-0 with a run in the third, coming off a home run from Sykes, before Foley put their first run on the board in the fourth and another in the fifth. The Vikes picked up one more in the fourth and another in the fifth to take the 12-2 game. Sykes had a phenomenal day at the plate, hitting for the cycle, picking up three RBI and scoring three times. The team totaled 13 hits in the contest. Peterson and Koehler had two apiece, and virtually everyone on the roster picked up at least one hit. North Branch 0 WBL 8 Three errors and four White Bear Lake hits in the first inning were the undoing of the Vikes in the 8-0 loss to White Bear Friday. White Bear came up with five runs in the opening inning, and tallied two more runs on two Vikings errors in the seventh. Schlagel and Peterson picked up one hit each for the Vikings only offensive tallies. Schlagel took the loss on the hill, walking three and striking out one. The games even the Vikings record at 4-4, and 4-1 in the conference. The team was scheduled to take on Pine City Tuesday, and travels to Milaca Thursday and Park Cottage Grove Saturday. ©ECM Post Review |
