Former Senator Janet Johnson honored as Woman of Distinction

On May 11, former State Senator Janet Johnson of North Branch was presented, posthumously, with a Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Woman of Distinction Award at he DFL Womenís Hall of Fame luncheon at the Town and Country Club in St. Paul.

Sen. Johnson was honored as a dedicated feminist and environmentalist and for taking on the ìbig guysî to battle for what was right and what was principled.

She was considered a mentor to other women seeking to have input in the political process.
Johnson was driven to make the world a better place for everyone, including children and she was known to be a tenacious battler and ardent advocate for those otherwise voiceless in the traditional political process.

ìWe miss the voice of Janet Johnson in the Senate, although I feel her presence in spirit . . . she worked so hard, with such dedication . . . she never gave up the fight for a better life for all Minnesotans.î said Senator Twyla Ring.

Encouraged by her friendship with Sen. Johnson, Sen. Ring decided to run and was elected to fill Johnsonís Senate seat upon Johnsonís untimely death in the summer of 1999.

This yearís ceremony, sponsored by the Womanís Summit Committee, was the third annual tribute to outstanding DFL women.
