Baseball handed two losses in BC tourney

The Vikings baseball team opened the week strong, with a 13-3 ten-run rule victory at home against Pine City last Tuesday.

Senior Jake Sykes picked up the win, pitching the complete game.

The Vikes then traveled to Brooklyn Center last weekend, playing three games in two days. The team came away with one win and two losses, with both losses in nine innings of play.

The tournament began with North Branch facing Montgomery-Lonsdale Friday. The Vikes came away with a 10-1 victor.

Opening the scoring in the first inning, the Vikes rally started with a double from senior Alex Streater and a single from senior Ryan Peterson. Streater then scored on a single from junior Andy Huberty.

North Branch widened its lead to 4-0 with three more in the second. These came after senior Zach Carlbom singled and senior Jake Sykes reached first safely, followed by another single from junior Mike Delany to load the bases.

Senior Brandon Trampe drove in one run on a sacrifice fly and Streater brought in the next two off a single.

After M-L scored one in the third, North Branch answered with four more runs in the inning. Huberty, Jake Anderson and Carlbom reached on errors, before Sykes drove in two runs on a double. The next two runs scored on a sacrifice from Delany and a single from Trampe.

The Vikes sealed the win with the last two runs of the game in the fifth inning, highlighted by a double from Peterson and singles from Jeremy Anderson and Jake Anderson.

For the game, Trampe, Streater, Peterson, Carlbom and Jeremy Anderson picked up two hits apiece. Darrin Vogt recorded the win, allowing only three hits and striking out five.

The next two games went into extra innings, and both resulted in one run losses for the Vikings.

First up, North Branch was defeated by Brooklyn Center 6-5.

The Vikings held a 3-1 lead going into the fourth, before BC notched two in the fourth and another in the fifth to take the 4-3 lead.

The Vikings took the lead back with two in the seventh, before BC tied it up a 5-all to send the game into extra innings. Neither team scored in the eighth, but BC was able to pick up a run in the ninth for the win.

Jake Anderson led the offense, going 3 for 4 including two doubles. Trampe and Streater picked up two hits apiece. Sykes was on the mound for North Branch, recording 14 strikeouts and allowing only five hits and no walks.

In the final game of the tourney, North Branch again lost by one, falling to Blake 7-6.

In the loss, Jeremy Anderson went 3 for 4 including a home run and two singles. Jake Anderson pitched eight innings, with Huberty coming in for relief in the ninth. Anderson struck out eight and gave up nine hits.

This week, the team was scheduled to take on Chisago Lakes in a night game Tuesday, and will host Princeton Thursday and Milaca Friday.
