Baseball snags two wins, record goes to 5-3By Barbara Brown Rush Cityís baseball team took two wins an added to their winning season record last week. Rush City 11, Isle 1 The team faced Isle April 30 and routed the Huskies on their home field in five innings, ending the game early 11-1. The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning, with a key shot by junior Dustin Willert. The fourth inning brought two more runs for the team on a single by junior Adam Nelson and a two-run homer by sophomore Brian Roll. Four more bags came up in the fifth on five singles and a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Kellin Sybrant, juniors Derek Benson and Dylan Lindman, Nelson and Roll all collected hits in the fifth. Lindman knocked in one run, Roll brought in two on a single and senior Shawn Sjostrom was credited with an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Nelson got a nod from head coach Bob Schlagel. Roll had two hits, including a single and a home run and pushed four runs around for the Tigers. ìIt was the best all-around game of the year,î Schlagel said. Isle, however traveled to Rush City Monday night and pay backs were on the mind. Rush City 3, Isle 8 The Huskies scored four unearned runs in the first inning and one in the second. The fifth inning left the Tigers down 8-0, but the team turned around in the sixth to score two runs and one in the seventh. While the Tigers were able to make contact with the ball, Schlagel said it was usually hit right to a Husky player, making it hard to score. Rush City 10, Onamia 7 In a May 2 game at home against Onamia, Rush City pulled out the win 10-7. The Tigers collected nine hits and Roll led the way with a single and a triple. He also knocked in two runs. Nelson picked up three runs for the team and stole four bases. Pitching, a key focus for Schlagel in upcoming games and practices, shifted three times against the Panthers. Junior Josh Munchow started and went three innings to give up two hits, strike out two, walk four and give up three runs. Willert was brought in for the Tigers for the next two innings and he gave up three hits, two strike outs, four walks and three runs. Benson finished the pitching cycle without giving up a hit, walk or run and added one strike out, retiring all four batters he faced. Willert was awarded the win. ©ECM Post Review |
