Tigers capture tourney trophyThe Rush City softball team captured the consolation trophy in the Ogilvie Tournament held May 4. In the first round of the eight-team tournament, the Tigers fell to West Lutheran 5-4. Rush City took an early lead in the game, edging ahead of West Lutheran 4-3 after four innings. West Lutheran picked up two runs in the fifth on three singles to take the lead and keep it through the end of the game. Freshman left fielder Breann Stottler went two for three, scoring once and making two super catches in left field. She also fired a quick throw to Scott at third base for a double play on a West Lutheran pop up. Junior center fielder Samantha Saxton robbed two West Lutheran hitters of their glory by snagging two fly balls. The second game of the double elimination tournament resulted in a Rush City win against Pine City 5-3. Sophomore Mindy Scott pitched and picked up her first varsity win. Pine City had led the game 3-2 until the bottom of the fifth when lead off walks to Saxton and sophomore catcher Meghan OíShea and triple by second baseman junior Page Rieland gave the Tigers the lead. Scott drove in the third run of the inning for a 5-3 Tiger win. The game ended with a double play from the Tigers to seal the deal. The Tigers beat Trinity 7-5 to take the consolation tournament trophy. Trinity scored one run in the first and three in the third on three Tiger errors and a triple to take a 4-0 lead over the Tigers. Rush City picked up three in the top of the fifth on a single by Saxton, a walk to Stottler and a triple by Scott. The team took three more runs on a walk to junior first baseman Jess Prettner, a single by Saxton and a walk to Rieland loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly from Stottler scored a run by Rieland and Larson drove in Scott in the seventh to clinch the win. Rush City 7, Isle 15 Isleís hard-hitting team pulled out the punches when they hosted Rush City April 30 when the Tigers fell to the Huskies 15-7. Isle had consistent scoring throughout the game, bringing in runs in all but the fourth inning. A highlight of the game was the Tigersí two double play completions. Larson went two for four with one RBI and was part of both Tiger double plays. Sophomore second baseman Ashley Stanley started off the fifth inning with a bang when she smacked a triple to right field to start a three-run inning for the Tigers. Scott drove Stanley home on an infield out. ìWe gave Isle too many good pitches and they made the most of it,î said head coach Rick Kosloski. Rush City 13, Pine City 9 In a May 3 away game against Pine City, the Tigers took the lead and scored throughout the game, with the exception of the fourth inning to finish with a 13-9 win. ìRush City had its most productive day offensively this season,î Kosloski said. The Tigers pounded out 14 hits with four doubles. Saxton went two for four with a double. Larson added to the effort with two hits and two RBI. Rielandís pitches were right on target. She gave up only nine hits, walked six and struck out three Dragon batters. ìIt was unusual, but great, to see every player got at least one hit in the game,î Kosloski said. The teamís overall record went to 5-6 as of last Saturday. ©ECM Post Review |
