Harris fills full-time maintenance position
By Danielle Strenke The Harris City Council approved hiring Mike Kriz as the cityís full-time maintenance employee at its meeting Thursday, Nov. 7. Krizís hiring comes one year after the council originally interviewed applicants for the position. Filling the position was delayed as the city ironed out financial and budgetary difficulties resulting from the theft of city funds from the former city clerk. During the initial interviewing process last fall, the council narrowed the field of applicants down to two. After reviewing the applications, Kriz was approved for the position. Mayor Richard Hanson said the city had looked at hiring a full-time maintenance person for some time. ìThe sum of everything thatís done in the city justifies a full-time position, not including things that should be done that havenít been,î he said. Currently, Harris has two part-time employees who perform some of the duties of a maintenance person, and the city contracts for additional services like mowing and well pump repair. Also at last weekís meeting, City Attorney Kevin Shoeberg requested permission to review the cityís expenses related to building fees and permits. He said the city has been spending an average of $1,300 to $3,300 per month on these fees, including a high of $7,100 in October. About 70 percent of the fees are paid to the cityís building inspector. ìWe want to keep the fees fair and justified, but thatís a lot of money that your residents and people doing business in your city are paying,î he said. The council approved Shoebergís request to review the fees.
