Bauerly contract extended at ECSWC

By Danielle Strenke
The East Central Solid Waste Commission approved an extension of a contract that dates back to 1994 to Bauerly Companies for mining and excavation work at its Mora landfill.
At its regular meeting Thursday, Nov. 14, the commission extended the deadline for completing mining and materials removal at the site to Aug. 1, 2003. Bauerly Companies also agreed in the contract to pay a settlement to the commission after trespassing on commission property and damaging land and trees on the northern boundary of the property.
Bauerly Companies was originally hired in 1994 by the commission to mine rock and sand materials off of commission property. ìThe commission wanted to capture that usable material and also create a base for the landfill,î executive director Allen Bonini said.
He told the commission earlier this year that it was obvious to him that Bauerly would not be able to meet an Oct. 31, 2002 deadline to complete the mining.
Bonini asked the commission to approve an extension, providing for damages of $1,000 per day if the work is not completed by Aug. 1, 2003 and increasing to $2,000 per day if it is delayed later than Aug. 10, 2003.Continued from front
Bauerly Cos. also has a deadline of Aug. 1, 2003 to complete land restoration after dumping material on the northern portion of ECSWC property. The restoration includes returning the property to its original grade and planting trees and seedlings. After discussion, the commission members voiced their satisfaction over the contract extension and approved the new deadline.
In his directorís report, Bonini told the commissioners about a multi-county meeting set for Thurs., Nov. 21 in Isanti. Members of the commission as well as their fellow commissioners from Chisago, Isanti, Mille Lacs, Kanabec and Pine are invited to attend the meeting.
Also invited are local legislators and representatives from Filmore, St. Louis and Wright counties.
The meeting will focus on proposed language that will be submitted to the state asking to forgive repayment of $3 million in grants given to those eight counties when they began their solid waste operations.
State returns clean audit
The commission was notified that the state has completed an audit of the commissionís 2001 books, and has presented a clean report. ìThey were very pleased with our performing and reporting practices,î Bonini said.
Holiday hours
Due to the upcoming holidays, the Mora site will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.
