Spirit of hometown still alive

To the editor:
With all of the changes that have happened in my hometown of North Branch, there are some things that remind me of the town of my upbringing. On Sunday, my husband and I played a round of golf on the course I lived next to during all of my childhood.
There is now a medical clinic where we used to play ball.
There are houses in Bocklandís woods. The noise coming off of the freeway drones at a steady hum. But the oak trees that line the course have been there for many, many decades. The tree that we neighbor kids jumped off on a bag swing still lives. The tire swing oak still lives. Generations of squirrels have lived in those oak groves. This year I heard more frogs and saw more dragonflies near the creek than in many years. The beautiful landscaping on the course combines native plants and flowers for habitat for butterflies and food for birds.
People who cared about the history of the golf course and who had ideas for improvements have worked hard to provide citizens with a local gem.
Can the same spirit work in housing, downtown design, traffic flow, support for schools, and in keeping the best parts of the natural environment safe? I think so.
