Vikings runners fare well at Swain Invite

The North Branch cross country teams competed well at the annual Swain Invitational in Duluth Saturday, Oct. 5.
With more than 10,000 runners and spectators, the event is one of the largest high school meets in the country.
Runners at all levels for the Vikings turned in respectable places and many improved their times.
For girls varsity, Katie Hasleiet came in 43rd (17:25) out of 150 runners. Kara Lundeen was 140th (20:50).
On the boys side, Ryan Smith led with a 61st place (18:41) finish out of 188 runners.
For sophomore boys, Mitchell Pohlkamp was 9th (15:33) out of 55 runners, and Nick Sausen was 10th (15:35).
JJ Koerber continues to be one of the leaders in the field of 7th and 8th grade boys. He finished in sixth place (9:42) out of 146 runners. Nick Ramberg was 26th (10:23).
Caitlyn Forrest led the team for 7th and 8th grade girls, finishing in 16th (12:05), followed by Amanda Peterson in 19th (12:10).
At the Big Lake / Becker Invite Sept. 30, the boys junior varsity captured first with three top 10 finishes. Sausen was first at 20:05, Ramberg was second at 20:40 and Chad Schrandt was seventh at 21:13.
The boys varsity squad also did well, taking fourth out of 11 teams. Smith had the best finish, at 18:08 for eighth place. Sam Suparat was 18th (19:00).
Rachel Souther led the girls JV with a sixth place finish (18:59), followed by Tiffany Peterson in eighth (19:07).
Hasleiet was 15th at 16:50 for the varsity girls.
This week, the team will compete in the Rum River Conference championships Thursday at Pine City, as they train for subsections starting next week.
