North Branch driver avoids injury by ducking
By Greg Hunt Folks in the Friday afternoon commute eastward out of Cambridge on Oct. 11 saw a strange sight as a pickup truck was crashed on top of a car at the corner of Hwy. 95 and Flanders Street N.E. Luckily, no major injuries were reported from the accident. The accident, which occurred at 2:47 p.m., started when the red Chevy S-10 pickup driven by Bob Stamper of Cross Lake and heading west on Hwy. 95 collided with a L-10 flatbed truck (driverís name unavailable). Stamper said his truck rolled over once, maybe twice, and landed on top of the green Saturn which was in the eastbound lane on Hwy. 95. ìI was just sitting at the stoplight when I saw those two guys hit,î recalled Terry Steele of North Branch, the driver of the Saturn. ìI then ducked down between the front seats, just for the sake of ducking. When I looked up, there was a tire staring me in the face.î Steele had glass fly into his vehicle, but he avoided major injury to his eyes and elsewhere with his early duck. Steele and his wife said that prior to the accident they had planned on trading the Saturn in on Saturday. Officers from both the Cambridge Police Department and Isanti County Sheriffís office directed the heavy Friday afternoon traffic around the accident scene. Minnesota State Trooper crash reconstructionists later investigated the scene.
