Another word on Green Acres
To the editor: I am writing this in response to the misconception about our residents who live at Green Acres County Care Center and the new site proposal. I have worked at Green Acres for almost six years. In that time I have seen many changes. Some for the good and some not so good. In my opinion, and speaking from an educatorís point of view, a new site location for Green Acres would be a good change. I canít understand why anyone would think itís OK to tuck our aged back in a remote area with minimal stimulation. Is this presumption looking at the quality of life for the residents? Are you aware that the more stimulation and reason to think the more a person retains their cognitive status? Statistically a person without stimulation deteriorates faster. The residents at Green Acres are still members of the community. They retain all their rights and still have a voice. Do they not have the right to see growth, activity and stimulation in the world around them? My mother-in-law lived in a long-term care facility the last year of her life. She truly enjoyed observing the coming and going in the community of Crystal. She was also close enough to many community buildings (store, restaurants, etc.) where she could walk or easily get from point A to point B. The activity staff did an excellent job but could only offer so many activities in a given day. Then what does a person do? The environment in which a person lives can be very stimulating. What a perfect choice for the new Green Aces. You have the wooded area and the community all in one. Pam Klosner, RN,C Program Manager/GACCC
