Urges voters to say yes for schools
To the editor: I urge taxpayers in Cambridge-Isanti School District 911 and North Branch District 138 to support the levy referendum questions on the November ballot. Although the state took the burden off property taxes to support the basic school aid formula, the state did not increase the formula (with the exception of rolling in previously approved levy dollars). So, although the schoolís portion of property taxes decreased, districts did not get any additional funds. It is not surprising that districts across the state of Minnesota have cut transportation budgets, dismissed teachers, raised activity and other fees, postponed book purchases and technology upgrades, cut programs and increased class sizes. Every survey shows that Minnesotans feel quality education is important for all students - no matter their socio-economic status, their race, their innate abilities or disabilities, or where they live. I urge Minnesotans to let their vote be their voice. I urge Dist. 911 and Dist. 138 voters to say ìyesî to local support and local control of their school system. Twyla Ring North Branch
