City to charge rent at liquor store
By Barbara Brown The Stacy City Council voted at its Oct. 8 meeting to charge the municipal liquor store rent. Council members wanted the liquor store rent charged because they said ñ although it looks like the city is simply shifting money from one hand to the other ñ it is a way for the council to get a good look at the financial situation at the liquor store and bar. Last year, the city-run liquor store and bar showed revenues of nearly a half million dollars, but profits of less than $20,000. Currently, the cityís liquor store committee is serving as manager and a consultant has been hired by the city to help the city determine if the liquor store can be more profitable. ìItís a way for us to figure out if itís a money-making venture,î said Councilman Lee Schultz. ìIf it is, fine. If itís not we should look at other uses for that building.î The council also voted to not cut off water and sewer service for non-payment after a discussion at its meeting last week. The council had been asked whether disconnecting service was an option if customers did not pay their bills. The council has been investigating over the past few months some discrepancies between usage reports and the amounts and costs customers are being billed. Also at the meeting, the council appointed election judges for the coming general election. They are Barbara Cummings, head judge; Elle Cummings, Helen Dahl, Karie Karr, Linda Miller, Diane Ness and Sharon Payne, city clerk. The election will be certified by Nov. 7.
