Foley rocks North Branch in 28-3 loss
Coming off a big 22-19 homecoming win, the Vikings were routed by Foley last Friday in a 28-3 loss. Foley struck early and often with four touchdowns in the first three quarters. The first came at five minutes into the first quarter as the Falcons drove 65 yards, ending on a five-yard run. The extra point failed, ending the first with the Vikes trailing 6-0. Foley scored on its first possession in the second quarter, but failed to complete the two-point conversion for a 12-0 lead. The Falcons quickly increased their lead to 18-0 with a TD midway through the second quarter. Again, the two-point conversion attempt failed. North Branch took possession with 5:48 remaining in the half and put together a good drive. With no time left, Britt Baumann kicked a 36-yard field goal to put the Vikings on the board, trailing 18-3 at the half. Head coach Joel Swanson said despite the deficit, the Vikings never let up. ìWe played hard, we came out in the second half playing hard even though we trailed by 20 points,î Swanson said. Foley picked up another touchdown and added a field goal in the third quarter for the 28-3 lead. The Vikes held Foley scoreless in the fourth quarter, but were unable to put any sizable drives together. Swanson said the experience and strength of Foley was too much for the Vikings to overcome. ìWe were forced to double block their defensive tackle Darren Freese, because he was so much bigger than our guys,î he said. The time of possession tallies were split, with the Vikes narrowly edging Foley. The true tale comes in offensive stats, as North Branch was only able to pick up seven first downs and 89 total yards while Foley notched 24 first downs and 387 yards. Quarterbacks Mike Dahlke and Matt Fletcher completed two passes each for 48 total yards. Leading the team in receptions was Britt Baumann with a 31-yard catch. Jeremy Anderson caught two tosses for 10 yards and Jake Anderson picked up one pass for 7 yards. The Vikings record fell to 1-4 on the season, with three games remaining in the regular schedule. This week, the team takes on St. Michael-Albertville at home Friday.
