NB girls soccer shut out twice
The North Branch girls soccer team was shut out in two home games last week, falling to Spring Lake Park and Cloquet. Spring Lake Park needed only one goal to claim victory Sept. 24, coming away with a 1-0 win. The Vikings looked strong in the outing, keeping it close and taking several shots on goal. Head coach Kristen Hetland said the game may have been a loss, but it was one of the teamís best games this year. ìWe played very well. It was a moral victory for us,î she said. ìAs a team, we made the changes and adjustments that we have been practicing all year.î The Sept. 26 match-up against Cloquet brought totally different results from the team, as they couldnít seem to get into the game. Cloquet scored three goals in the first half and added a fourth in the opening minutes of the second half. Hetland was disappointed with the play of the team. ìWe were so flat, comparing the game to Tuesdayís game, we were a totally different team.î She said senior goaltender Jacque Wagner had a great game and seniors Sasha Brabec and Traci Reimann also played strong. Hetland was pleased with how well freshman Natalia Lahood played in her first game at defense. It is difficult to compete when the whole team is not playing consistently, Hetland said. ìWe are not where we need to be, but we are improving every day,î she said. The losses bring the teamís record to 4-5-1 with three games remaining in the regular season. This week, the Vikes host Chisago Lakes Tuesday and Cambridge Thursday, before travelling Monday to take on Concordia Academy. Subsection play will begin Thursday, Oct. 10.
