Girls cross country wins St. Johnís Invite on rough trail

The Tigers girls cross country team blew the competition away at last weekís St. Johnís Invitational meet at St. Johnís Prep School.
The team scored 61 points after completing the rough course full of rocks, roots and ruts to take chances of a win away from any of the other teams.
Following in far second was St. Cloud Cathedral at 81 and Roylaton with 108. Maple Lake had 111, Belgrade-Brooten ended at 113, Hinckley-Finlayson showed at 116 and Howard Lake came in at 150.
Tiger runners took three first place finishes and 12 finished in the top 10 in six races.
Junior Kayla Witte has a solid chance at making a showing at state compeition this season if she continues improving her times.
Witte breezed past her previous own best time at last Thursdayís meet, finishing in 16:19.
Senior Mary Jo Youngbauer continues to improve her times and Thursdayís meet brought a new all-time best for her. Youngbauer crossed the finish line in 13th last week.
Freshman Becky Kemen will be looked to during the second half of the season for leadership of the underclassmen because of her strength on the course.
She set a personal record as well and finished 7th in the invite.
Christine Frandsen came in 8th for the girls and Britta Johnson finished 32nd.
Junior Dustin Hecht continues to show his strength and finished 21st in the field with his best time ever of 19:34.
Sophomore Justin Jacobson also had a strong finish for the boys in 30th place.
Junior Josh Erickson was 34th, junior Mike Wuorinen took 36th and sophomore Jared Dahlberg was 52nd.
For the seventh and eighth grade races, eighth-graders Brittany Frandsen finished first and Amber Hoffman came in right behind her in second.
Seventh-grader Samantha Gorman took fourth and eighth-grader Kelly Moore rounded out the top five.
On the boys side, eighth-grader Josh Dahl took first, followed by eighth-grader Zach Johnson in second place.
ìWe are pleased with the teamís efforts and places today,î said head coach Kevin Smith.
ìOur kids were real aggressive over the trails throughout the woods.
ìAfter a hard week of practices, the team responded well with their efforts,î he said. ìWe hope this pattern holds over the next few weeks.î
The team traveled to Mora on Tuesday and will compete in the famous Swain meet in Duluth on Saturday at 10 a.m.
