Girls take first at Frederic meet

The girls Rush City cross country team ran away with the first place trophy from the Frederic meet Sept. 3.
While most of the girls did not implement coach Kevin Smithís emphasis on ěpack running,î their strategy worked out.
Christine Frandsen placed second of 41 runners over the hilly course.
Becky Kemen, Mary Jo Youngbauer, Britta Johnson and Kayla Witte stayed relatively close together, finishing 11th, 12th, 16th and 18th respectively.
Kayla Johnson finished 29th.
ěKemen ran a strong race, as did Mary Jo,î Smith said. ěKayla Johnson beat the fifth place runner from Hinckley, increasing the team score.î
The team finished the race with 35 points, Grantsburg took 38 and Hinckley-Finlayson finished in third with 49 points.
Webster, St. Croix Falls and Unity all received incompletes.
Although the boys team started the race in pack formation, that changed late in the second mile when the group separated.
The boys team finished seven of nine teams with 167 points.
Dustin Hecht led the boys pack running and had an excellent finish, Smith said. Other good finishes were recorded by Noah Reichert and Josh Erickson.
For seventh and eighth grade competition, Smith recognized the first place finish of Amber Hoffman and the third place secured by Brittany Frandsen.
For the boys seventh/eighth, Josh Dahl finished second and Zach Johnson was fifth.
The next run is Sept. 12 at the North Branch Invitational.
The teams did not finish as well in the Sept. 5 Pine City Invitational.
The girls team finished third of six with 67 points and the boys were five of six, coming in at 147 points.
The varsity boys sqaud was led by Hecht, who finished 20th in 19:48. Jared Dahlberg came in at 20:31 for 28th place, Reichert was 35th, Justin Jacobson was 39th, Mike Wuorinen was 40th and Josh Erickson was 41st.
For the girls team, Kayla Witte finished fourth in 16:41 and Christine Frandsen was 7th in 17:19.
Other finishes for the girls team were Becky Kemen, 18th; Youngbauer, 22nd; Britta Johnson, 35th; and Kayla Johnson, 43rd.
ěThe girls team had strong performances thoughout the lineup led by Kayla and Christine,î Smith said. ěIf we can move up our next girls a few places, we will be contending for first place in most meets.
The boys team is starting to take shape as individual runners decrease their times and pus teammates for a spot on the varsity seven, Smith said.
Junior high runners Amber Hoffman and Josh Dahl once again proved their stuff at the Sept. 5 meet. The two came in first place for their teams.
ěThe junior high girls and boys are just outstanding,î Smith said. ěThese kids are dominating their opponents in the past few races.
ěThey are really fun to watch.î
