A graveside service was conducted at 2:30 p.m. that same day at the West Rock Cemetery in Rock Creek. Arrangements were by the Olson Chapel, Funeral and Cremation Service, Rush City, Minn. Shirley, the daughter of Sam and Delia Martin, was born May 23, 1929 in West Rock, Minnesota. She and her brother, David, grew up on a farm there and attended the local school. Shirley attended high school in Pine City, Minnesota. Following her graduation in 1947, she went on to attend nurses training and became a licensed practical nurse. She later worked at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On December 26, 1953, Shirley married John N. Hoff, a union that was to last nearly 49 years. Her favorite hobby was doing crafts, and she was skilled at embroidery, hardanger, needlepoint, crewel, tatting, and crocheting. She also loved to read and a trip to the library was part of her routine. Shirley and John made two trips to Norway, and they enjoyed an annual trip to California to visit their son, David. They also went on a few vacations to Brainerd, Minnesota and to the Wisconsin Dells. A caring and loving wife, mother, foster mother, and grandmother, she is survived by her husband, John, and their daughter, Monica DeLong, both of Eagan, Minn.; son, David, Santa Rosa, Calif.; grandchildren, Julia and Jon DeLong; and her brother, David Martin of Rock Creek, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Donald, and infant son, Douglas; and her son-in-law: Monte DeLong. ©ECM Post Review |
