Irene Schefus

Irene Kalnins Zakis Schefus was born in Latvia on Feb. 24, 1918 to Martins and Hermine Kalnins. She died at the Hillcrest health Care Center in Rush City, Minn. on Sept. 11, 2002, having reached the age of 84 years.

Funeral service was at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 at the Olson Funeral Chapel in Rush City with the Reverend Laurie OíShea officiating. Organist was Nancy Sterk and soloist was Muriel Bungert. Interment was at Fort Ridgley Dale Cemetery in Fairfax, Minn.

Her mother, Hermine Kalnins; her son, Eriks Zakis; and her second husband, Harry Schefus, preceded Irene in death in the United States of America. In Latvia she was preceded in death by her father, Martins Kalnins; her first husband, Nikolai Zakis; her brother, Eriks Kalnins; and all of her other relatives and friends.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Inara and John Langford of Rush City, and Judy and Allen Ochocki of Hastings, Minn.; grandchildren: Alexandra (David) Rutledge, Brooklyn Center, Minn., Brienne Ochocki, Eagan, Minn., and Erik K. Zakis, Minneapolis, Minn.
Irene touched many lives during her lifetime here on earth. She lived in Latvia, Augsburg, German; Olivia, Fairfax, and Rush City, all in Minnesota. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and possessed an exceptional talent for charcoal sketchings and drawings. She was fluent in five languages, English, Latvian, Polish, Russian, and German.
