Opinion
Sunday Night MaryHelen Swanson, editor
North Branch school district residents are getting anxious. Theyíve been hearing the word ěreferendumî for the upcoming election in November but many are still very confused as to what the district wants. At least thatís what Iíve been hearing. Apparently the district will have three issues before the public in six weeks: passage of a $27.5 million bond issue for a new elementary school building, sale of general obligation building bonds for land acquisition for future school buildings and an excessive levy referendum that would help provide $500 per pupil to cover large anticipated deficits next year and beyond. The people are waiting for public meetings and information to explain what the district will be seeking in November. I realize there are a lot of tís to cross and iís to dot, but time is passing quickly and people are starting to get very concerned. Iíll have to admit Iím not as informed about this yearís election issues as in previous years, so it is difficult for me to form an opinion about recommending passage or not. I, too, am looking for more information. I think I understand the school building issue, I understood it last year when the referendum failed. I walked the halls of the primary school and saw students studying in places not meant for education, i.e. teacherís lounge. And I saw several classes sharing a room separated only by dividers making conversation on one side difficult so as not to disturb the classes on the other side. And more. There are real issues of space needs for district children. I know the school board is not blind to these issues and has worked out a temporary solution by leasing classrooms in the new education wing at Trinity Lutheran this year. But we all know that with an increasing population, no matter how much it might be slowed with more stringent community development planning, there will be more and more children in the North Branch schools and they will need a place to study. A dedicated group of people has been encouraging passage of the school building project. They may have answers for us all. But SOS - Support Our Schools - needs some financial help right now. As politicians will agree, lawn signs are expensive. And mailed flyers, buttons and labels are expensive. It is expensive to take a stand. So, SOS wondered if I would help them with a plea to the community, individuals and businesses. If you want to support this group, the ones behind the signs with the bright yellow stars, the ones fighting for the kids, financial donations would be greatly appreciated. The donation can be a recognized gift or anonymously given. SOS co-chairs Donna Hubbard, (651) 674-7056, and Michelle Young, (651) 674-0118, would be more than glad to hear from you.
