Tiger cross country younger runners may be the ones to watch
The Rush City cross country team got off to a bumpy season start Aug. 26 when the team traveled to Milaca for its opening meet. The girls varsity group placed seven of 11 teams. The boys team did not start five varsity runners and therefore did not have a varsity score. For the girls, Christine Frandsen was 16th at 18:08 in 2.5 miles. For boys junior varsity squad, Noah Reichert came in 16th at 22:28. Amber Hoffman may shape up to be the one to watch throughout the season. Hoffman, in eighth grade, finished in first place in the 2,000 meter run with a time of 9:13. Brittany Frandsen wasnít too far behind Hoffman and finished in fourth place at 9:22. Coach Kevin Smith congratulated Frandsen and Reichert for ìexcellent placesî in the JV and varsity runs. Kayla Witte came in at 19:42, Mary Jo Youngbauer, at 20:22, was followed closely by teammates Becky Kemen at 20:27 and Britta Johnson at 20:58. ìWe had many first-time runners in this race,î said coach Smith. ìWe were very encouraged by the places. ìIt will take time for these kids to gain experience, but they are working very hard and have great attitudes.î Although the boys did not receive a score, coach Smith lauded Jared Dahlberg for coming in at 23:32 for a distance of 3.1 miles. Mike Wuorinen followed not far behind Dahlberg and finished in 24:24. In the girls junior varsity race, Kayla Johnson finished at 23:05. Other finishing times for the JV boys were: Josh Erickson, 23:39; Justin Jacobson, 24:52; Dustin Hecht, 25:01; Trenton Waters, 26:05; Chad Karlsson, 29:20; Alex Saumer, 29:24; Lee Robinson, 31:27; Joe Widman, 32:06. Finishing the girls seventh and eighth grade competition were Derra Gullickson, 10:06; Samantha Gorman, 10:18; Janet Kemen, 10:24; Kelly Moore, 10:28; Meredee Refshaw, 11:27; and Charlene Hubert, 11:30. The seventh/eighth grade girls team finished second overall out of six teams. The team traveled to Frederic Tuesday night for a meet and was scheduled at Pine City on Thursday.
