How much blood must we give?
To the editor: I just received my notice of valuation for my property tax. I canít tell you how upset I am. My property value jumped up almost $24,000 in one year. How I wonder, could this happen? Then I look at the growth here in the city of North Branch as well as Chisago County. I have been told that growth pays for itself. Well it doesnít. We need to pay for new roads, sewer systems, water wells, storm sewer systems, and schools. Even with more people paying the cost, we end up paying more. The word ìbondî seems to come to the mouth of most of those in power. Donít they realize that with the increase of growth, that the property taxes will continue to go up and up. How will single parents who are just making ends meet, as well as those on fixed incomes continue to live here. Just look at those who are being assessed over by Hemingway and CR 14, they are being assessed for roads, and pipes for city water and sewer even if they donít hook up. Some are being assessed in excess of $30,000 for their property. If you donít think this can happen to you, think again. Every time a developer says that they will pay for the expansion innocent residents in-between where the pipes are and their final destination seem to get assessed. Is this fair? The answer is NO! Now the City of North Branch approved bids for almost $450,000 for an equipment certificate. This happens when most cities are cutting back on expenses. It seems that if they donít rush to do this before May 1 then they might be required to ask voters to spend this money. The finance director David Stutelburg said we should pay about $105,000 the first year in 2004. This certificate would be for 5 years. This does not include our first payment of the liquor store bond of about $40,000 also in 2004. Three of the five city council members: Rod Lofquist, John Pace, Jr. and our Mayor Gloria Karsky voted to spend this money for the equipment certificate. Were they afraid that the citizens of North Branch would not approve a referendum? I think so, as the taxes have gone up too much already. How much more money will the citizens of North Branch be forced to pay? If you feel that you are over taxed then mark your calendar for May 5, at 7:30 p.m. in room 142 at the courthouse in Center City to be heard. Theresa Furman North Branch, MN
