Viking golfers battle elements in blustery season opener

The North Branch Viking girls golfers opened their season at the Pine City Scramble on Tuesday April 15.
Some glimpses of sun and a strong northeasterly wind greeted the golfers for their inaugural competition.
The clouds soon thickened and winter reminded everyone that it was not yet ready to give up its grasp on the area.
The winds grew stronger and the temperature dropped about 15 degrees during the 7-team event.
Team scores were: Milaca, 156; Foley, 163; Pine City 172; Chisago Lakes, 176; North Branch, 179; Mora, 179; and Princeton, 199.
For the Vikings, Sara Schwalbe, Hanna Lindberg and Kelsey Perreault were 44 and 42 for 86.
Danielle Nelson, Amy Aho and Lacee Scherer went 47 and 46 for 93.
ėThe scramble format was a good way for our young golfers to get a little experience, both with competition and with dealing with the spring golf season in Minnesota,î said head coach Dave Ambers.
ėThe kids were all anxious to play,î he said. ėThey were just as anxious to get back to the warmth of the clubhouse after the five hours out in the elements.î
Ambers said that although the team did not pull off a win, that the first outing would help the team prepare for future Rum River Conference bouts.
The North Branch team was set to host a competition in the conference Tuesday, April 22, at the North Branch Golf Course.
The team will compete in two to three matches per week for the rest of the season.
