Girls finish third in Tigerama
By Danielle Strenke The Rush City girls track team hosted its annual Tigerama Thursday, April 10. With several first and second place finishes, the girls finished with 87 points, enough for third place in the meet. Pine City captured first place, with 112 points and St. Croix Lutheran was in a close second with 111 points. Behind Rush City, Barnum was 4th, Braham in 5th, Hinckley-Finlayson in 6th, Moose Lake-Willow River in 7th, Frederic in 8th, Ogilvie in 9th and East Central in 10th place. Noticeably lacking in participants in the field events, Rush City made up those points by placing high in several track events. The Tigers were led by sophomore Christine Frandsen, who took first in both the 1600m and 3200m runs. Senior Britta Johnson anchored the 1600m relay team that also took first place. She was joined on the team by freshman Brianna Launderville and eighth-graders Amber Hoffman and Becca Rogers. Also placing well were freshman Alex Saxton, taking second in the 100m dash and freshman Heather Dean, with a second place finish in the 200m dash. The Tigers did not have competitors in the long jump or shotput. Depth at field events has been a traditional problem for both Rush City track teams. Head Coach Mike Vaughan said he was pleased with how well the team performed. ìIím very proud of their effort. Finishing in the top three at a big meet like this is a great effort for a young team,î he said. The boys hosted the boys Tigerama April 15. Following an extended holiday break, the two track squads will compete in a meet at Princeton Thursday.
