Sunday Night MaryHelen Swanson, editor
I was awe-struck in the presence of celebrity last Friday. For years I have watched on public television the documentaries about Dr. Jane Goodall, always with deep admiration for her work with wild animals and her persistence even when things didnít always go right. After a rather difficult week, I was so looking forward to the trek to Sandstone to visit with this extraordinary person. The snow, low visibility and icy road did not deter my intentions to get to the Audubon Center of the North Woods, for at the end of my journey I would actually be visiting with the awe-inspiring Dr.Goodall. And there I was, sitting straight across from her, as she sat calmly cuddling her stuffed animal mascot. Her voice was soft, perhaps from years of sitting quietly in the jungles of Tanzania waiting for the chimpanzees to get to know her. Still, she had a loud and powerful message to share with the young people and reporters who gathered for the youth summit that day - that each of us can make a difference. That makes us responsible for our lives. If we can make a difference for the good, we can also have the opposite affect. As Jane Goodall said, we may be ěone in 6 billionî on this planet, but we can do something each day to improve our world. And, when the masses of the little ěonesî in the 6 million work together, we can do great and wonderful things. Unfortunately, the masses can tear our world apart, too, of which we are all aware. What are you going to do today, be a part of the solution or part of the problem? Itís all in your own hands.
