Girls prepare for conference play
From Kristin Unverzagt, Coach The North Branch girls tennis team started the season with a tournament on Saturday, Aug. 16. North Branch got off to a rough start with a 0-7 loss to Elk River. However, they came back to beat Princeton 5-2 and Monticello 4-3. ìWe had a great first day of matches and we played really well, considering the high heat and humidity,î said coach Kristin Unverzagt. Three days later, North Branch faced tough competition at the Coon Rapids tournament. They were shut out by Coon Rapids, 0-7, despite several close matches. In the second round they lost a nail biter to South St. Paul 3-4. But solid play and endurance brought the team to a 6-1 win against St. Francis to end the day. NB played at home for the first time of the season on Thursday, Aug. 21 for the NB invite tournament. A tough loss to Centennial 2-5 started the day, which would only get worse for NB. In the next two rounds of the round robin tournament, NB lost 1-6 against Champlin Park and were shut out 0-7 against Mora. First doubles players Kelsey and Shannon OíHern tied for first place in individuals standings winning 2 out of 3, despite the teamís difficulties. The team battled back with a hard practice on Friday, Aug. 15, according to Coach Unverzagt. North Branch will meet Mora again in their first conference match on Sept. 2. Although they only have 2 wins going into conference play, the girls have high expectations according to Unverzagt. ìThe Girls are very positive and will work hard to reach their goals,î Unverzagt said. North Branch played at Forest Lake on Monday, Aug. 25 and at St. Francis on Aug. 26. Results will be in next weekís issue.
