Vikes open season with historical winFor the first time in school history, the North Branch boys hockey team opened its season with a win. The Vikings hosted Moose Lake at the Chisago Lakes Arena Saturday, Dec. 6 and came away with an 8-3 victory to claim its first-ever win in the opening game of a season. North Branch picked up where it left off, downing Moose Lake to open the season after earning its first victory of the 2002-03 season in the final game against Moose Lake. The Vikings started the scoring less than a minute into the first period, off the stick of Marty Yackel, unassisted. The Vikes took a 2-0 lead into the second period and added three more goals in the stanza. Kosky scored the first goal of the period at 8:36, assisted by Disrud. Disrud then scored his own goal at 7:47, assisted by Kosky. With less than two minutes left in the second, Nate Obitz scored for North Branch, unassisted, giving the Vikings a commanding 5-0 lead going into the final period. Moose Lake ruined the shut out by scoring three goals in the third, while North Branch added two more to seal the 8-3 win. The goals came from Obitz and Yackel, each picking up their second goal of the game. Kosky earned another assist on the goal from Obitz. Head Coach Greg Lien said it was a great way for the team to start the season. ìIt was a good performance by the entire team,î he said. ìDefensively the team played very well the first two periods with only a few lapses in the third.î Goalie Pete Samec earned the victory, coming up with some big saves throughout the game. ìHe played his angles very well and his glove robbed Moose Lake of a couple of early goals, which made a big difference,î Lien said. The Vikes face St. Francis Thursday, Dec.11 on the road and then host Rogers Saturday, Dec. 13 at Elk River. ©ECM Post Review |
