Tigers defeat Rivers Christian, Isle to start season 2-0

The Rush City girls basketball squad has started its season with a 2-game win streak after downing Rivers Christian Academy 57-39 Dec. 2 and Great River Conference foe Isle 38-34 Dec. 4.

The Tigers took a 17-11 lead after one quarter against Rivers Christian and increased its lead over the next three quarters. Rush City added 17 more in the second quarter while giving up 11 for a 34-22 halftime lead.

The Tigers outscored Rivers Christian 23-17 in the second half for the 57-39 win.

Head Coach Stuart Lang said it was a good way to start the season. ìOffensively we moved the ball well and spread it around to everyone,î he said.

Three players were in double digits for scoring, led by senior Mindy Scott and junior Holly Grimes with 11 apiece and junior Breann Stottler with 10 points.

Sophomore Heather Dean had a strong all-around game with 8 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals.
Seniors Cara Orn had 7 points, while junior Christine Frandsen added 3. Seniors Meghan OíShea and Ashley Stanley and junior Brittany Wendorf added 2 each.

Senior Christine Moore added 10 assists.

The squad made 63 percent from the line, but was 37 percent in 2-point attempts.

The Tigers opened conference play Dec. 4 and came away with a 38-34 win over Isle.

Rush City outscored Isle 10-8 in the first quarter, but watched Isle take the 18-16 lead at the half. A low-scoring third quarter ended with the Tigers holding the 24-22 lead.

The Huskies went on a run in the fourth quarter and held a 5-point lead with 5 minutes to go in the game, before Rush City went on its own 14-5 run to secure the win. The scoring in the final minutes was led by Dean who sunk three 3-pointers.

Dean ended the game with 13 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Tiger offense. Scott added 9 points and 7 rebounds, while Grimes had 6 points. Stanley picked up 4 points and Orn added 3. Stottler had 2 points and Wendorf added 1 to complete the scoring.

The team struggled at the free throw line, making 43 percent. Lang said the team struggled a bit offensively, but the defense kept the Tigers going. ìWe hit some big shots down the stretch that helped us overcome a good team,î he said.

Rush City takes its 2-0 record into conference games Thursday, Dec. 11 against Aitkin on the road and Tuesday, Dec. 16 against Hinckley-Finlayson at home.
