Should withdraw from the UN
To the editor: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), formed in 1949, was marketed to the American people as an alliance needed to block Soviet expansion westward. Itís charter, however, demonstrates that NATO was created as a regional arrangement under the umbrella of the United Nations. This, of course, means that all American military personnel who have ever served in a NATO command have actually served in a UN command. Further evidence that NATO is a UN subsidiary appeared on Oct. 13. At NATOís request, the UN Security Council voted unanimously to permit NATO to expand its military presence in Afghanistan. A UN Security Council resolution drafted by Germanyís UN delegation and promoted heavily by Lord Robertson of England, Natoís secretary general, authorized the increase of NATO forces in faraway Afghanistan. The ostensible reason for NATOís existence - protection against the Soviet Union - no longer exists. But because NATO has always been a UN subsidiary, it can be employed as the UNís permanent military arm, something the UN has never possessed outright. The alliance, originally only 12 members, now includes several members from the old Soviet bloc. The UN, ever a threat to the independence of all nations, is now openly employing NATO to flex its growing power. All of this constitutes one more reason why our nation should withdraw from the UN - and NATO as well. Doris Gilquist Harris
