OpinionChristmas memories, good or bad, make good storiesOne year I couldnít find my shoes as we were heading off to church Christmas Eve. I was about 6. I had to wear my tap shoes and left the house with a warning that Iíd better not make any tapping noises during the service. I donít know why, but that memory sticks in my mind. I remember some interesting tree-hunting events, I remember the cats that used the trunk of the tree as a playground, why I even remember playing ìSanta Juniorî the year mom decided we girls were too old to get a doll for Christmas. Santa Junior secretly purchased a doll and it was under the tree Christmas morning. It was more to remind us of the joys of all the dolls from Christmases past than to have a doll to play with. I remember the homemade ornaments of leftover yarn and toilet paper rolls and scraps of gift wrap. We thought our tree was the most beautifully decorated in the world. A look back at the pictures brings a gasp, because they were really dreadful decorations. Still, it was time well spent with my children. I remember Christmas Eve in the barn, the lowing of the cattle and the miraculous silence that came upon the animals just at midnight. I remember the exclamations of delight over special presents and the warmth of a family gathered for a few precious hours to celebrate the wonderful season. Iím sure each of you has a memory or two. The good ones and the oneís that you can laugh about now, but didnít then. Well, weíd love to have you share those memories with us. Send them along as soon as possible, keeping your stories brief. Weíll share them with our readers in our Dec. 24 edition. You can send them by e-mail: editor.postreview@ecm-inc.com, or by fax: (651) 674-7026, or by mail: Post Review, PO Box 366, North Branch, MN 55056, or drop them off at our office at 6448 Main Street, downtown North Branch. Editorís apology: Recently I included in our paper an article about a local group of people who gathered in Cambridge for an MCCL event. In a letter to the editor, Timothy Stanley, who represents NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota remarked that I must have made a mistake in putting this item in the paper. The reason it was included is because it was, as other items that are included in the paper, information about an event that happened that included local people in our local communities. There was no intent to push any agenda. I apologize for the abrupt editorís note at the end of Mr. Stanleyís letter. I should have explained the reason more clearly at the time. ©ECM Post Review |
