NB wrestlers earn wins at MonticelloNorth Branch Head Coach Tony Aho anticipated having a strong, experienced team coming into the season. Unfortunately, the squad was forced to give up forfeits at three weights during the Monticello tournament Dec. 6, leading to three losses and one tie on the day. The Vikes forfeited at 103 lbs, 112 lbs. and 135 lbs. against St. Francis, Minnewaska, Big Lake and St. Cloud Apollo. Despite giving up those points, the team tied Apollo 39-39 in its last match of the day. Earlier in the tourney, the Vikes fell 61-6 to St. Francis, 58-15 to Minnewaska and 39-36 to Big Lake. John Buchanan (140 lbs.) had a perfect day for the Vikes, notching wins by decision in all four matches. Heavyweight Jeremy Bergerson earned wins against St. Francis in overtime, Minnewaska by decision and Big Lake by disqualification. Cody Gallmeier (152 lbs.) won matches against Minnewaska, Big Lake and Apollo, and Jeff Holmgren (130 lbs.) also won against the same three teams. Aho said it was disappointing to give up the forfeits, but was pleased with the effort from the rest of the wrestlers. ìThe boys tried hard against good opponents and will be more competitive against teams like that as the year progresses,î he said. He was pleased with the big wins from Buchanan, Bergerson, Gallmeier and Holmgren on the day, and said Bill Oehlers (215 lbs.) showed improvement as he picked up wins against Big Lake and Apollo. The team suffered a key loss when eighth-grader Greg Arnt (125 lbs.) broke his arm in his final match of the day against Apollo. ìHe will be sorely missed,î Aho said. ©ECM Post Review |
