RC gymnasts defeat St. Anthony to open season

The Rush City gymnastics squad started its season with a 116.675-112.8 win over St. Anthony Dec. 11 in its new home venue at the Rush City Aquatic Center.

Although most of the varsity gymnasts struggled on the beam, they looked strong in the other three events, earning individual firsts on vault and floor and second on bars.

ìI was very pleased with their first meet of the season,î Head Coach Dianne Meier said. ìThey showed a lot of potential. There are many things in their routines that need to be cleaned up and connected, but the talent is there.î

She will look for improvement on beam, as there were 15 collective falls for the squad on varsity, as the team moves toward its goal of 130 points for the season.

On vault, Becky Osterdyk was first with an 8.5, Bethany Dahl was third with an 8.15, Molly Tomczyk was fourth with an 8.05 and Gabby Calander was fifth with a 7.9.
On floor, Dahl was first with an 8.15 and Jolene Holt was fourth with a 7.6.

On bars, Courtney Haavisto was second with a 7.35, Dani Lutz was fourth with a 7.1 and Jolene Holt was fifth with a 7.05.

On beam, Megan Antrobus was third with a 7.0, Haavisto was fourth with a 6.9 and Calander was fifth with a 6.35.
For junior varsity, Haavisto was first on vault with a 7.5, Mandela Oesterreich was second with a 7.4, Cheri Koecher was third with a 7.3 and Jolene Holt and Lindsey Klar tied for fourth with a 7.2.

On J.V. bars, Bethany Hagman was first with a 6.3, Osterdyk was second with a 6.0, Tomczyk was third with a 5.1 and Oesterreich was fourth with a 4.6.

On beam, Dahl was first with a 7.2, Caity Reis was second with a 6.5, Hagman was third with a 6.4, Oesterreich was fourth with a 6.2 and Lindsey Klar was fifth with a 5.4.

On floor, Amanda Lockwood was first with a 7.5, Reis was second with a 7.1, Osterdyk was third with a 7.0 and Antrobus ws fifth with a 6.8.

Hagman earned first in the J.V. all-around competition, with 26.5 points, and Oesterreich was second with 24.5 points.

ìOur J.V. squad once again is very strong,î Meier said. ìThroughout the season it will be very difficult to determine who has the first spot on varsity, they are all so talanted. They did a fantastic job and we are very proud of them.î

This week, the squad traveled to Spring Lake Park Monday and will be at Grantsburg Thursday, Dec. 18.
