It's good, but it's not over
Pulling a haggard, defeated man from a hole in the ground just doesnít seem to be a great moment of victory. I know there are many celebrating this week at the capture of Saddam Hussein and perhaps rightly so. The United States has done what few countries have ever been able to do - take alive a world renown villain who has caused so much pain, death and destruction. I donít have the slightest idea what should be done with the pathetic man now that we have him. Death would be an obvious answer, but how can all those tortured and murdered souls be redeemed by the death of one individual? And does he not have followers? Life imprisonment? Where? Who would want to be responsible for the care of this man for another 10 or 20 years or more? Where could he be kept that he would not cause great disturbance in the institution? How much would it cost to keep this man secure from others, as well as himself? Still, keeping him alive could prove to be the best way to learn about the mindset of such a pernicious villain. If he would allow it. With one after another tyrannical leaders rising to power in countries around the world over generations of time, it would seem that the answer is in delving into the psyche to learn the reasons that so much power can create such a scoundrel. Or maybe itís not really the power, either, but the money that does it. If we never get to the root, weíll probably be digging up more cads from underground hideouts in days to come. Some are naively saying now there will be no more terrorism. We all know that is not true. Bin Laden is still out there, as are many more who would blow themselves up for lesser causes than Saddamís. Truly there is victory in this capture, but before we put the man back in a concrete box and bury him underground again, we must get some answers. Much credit must go to the brave soldiers who were successful in this capture, and to all those still serving and dying overseas. The capture was good, but itís not over.
