Squirts win championship at Duluth TournamentFrom North Branch Hockey North Branchís B1 Squirts played in the Lester Park Hockey Classic in Duluth on Nov. 28-30 and brought home a big win. The team started on Friday playing against Canadaís Norwest Stars. That game was a shut out with North Branch winning 7-0. Scoring for that game was Cole Johnson and Calvin Miska in the first period. Tanner Danks assisted by Michael Santabrigida and Tommy Toohey scored the first goal of the second period. The second goal was scored by Trent Klatt assisted by Johnson and Brendon Bartholmy. Zach Carchedi was assisted by Johnson and Klatt for the third goal of the second period. The third period Toohey and Nick Lambrecht each scored a goal to end with a 7-0 score. This was the first shut out of the season for goalie Nick Miller. Game two was played on Saturday against Mora. This was a fast- paced exciting game. In the first period, North Branch dominated by scoring two goals, one by Johnson assisted by Toohey. The other goal was scored by Carchedi assisted by Klatt. The second period Mora scored the only goal. The third period Mora scored another goal tying the game 2-2. With 3:52 left in the game Miska scored what would be the winning goal. Shots on goal were 22 on Mora and 14 on North Branch. The championship game was played on Sunday against Canadaís KC Sabres. These two teams were pretty evenly matched. The first period the Sabres scored the only goal. The second period North Branch came back and tied with a goal unassisted by Klatt. With 2:59 left in the third period Charlie Fernow assisted by Miska and Lambrecht scored the winning goal of the game for a final score of 2-1, clinching the tournament for North Branch The shots on goal for that game were 21 on the Sabres and 23 on North Branch. After each game the coach from the opposing team chose a skater for the ìHustle Award.î Toohey, Miller and Fernow won those awards for their hard work out on the ice.
