Viking hockey picks up first win

The Vikings boys hockey team finally found what it has been searching for all season ń its first win.
The squad met Moose Lake Monday at Chisago Lakes arena, and came away with a 5-3 victory.

It came against the same team that the Vikings came close to defeating in their first meeting of the year, when Moose Lake eventually came out on top in overtime.

After a scoreless first period, North Branch was on the board first when Jeremy Schroeder scored off assists from Jake lane and Tony Watters.

The squad went up 2-0 when Levi Disrud found the net off an assist from Marty Yackel.

Moose Lake came back with 2 goals in the period to tie it up 2-all before Yackel found the net for an unassisted goal. The second ended with North Branch holding a 3-2 lead.

Andy Kittleson increased the Vikesí lead with an unassisted goal in the third. After Moose Lake added its third and final goal, Yackel came up with his second of the game to seal the 5-3 win for the Vikings.

It was the first win of the season for the Vikings in its first season back as a high school team, the importance of which was not lost on students at North Branch High School Tuesday. ěThe whole school is pumped,î Head Coach Greg Lien said.

He added that it was a big boost for the team, and the players are excited about the win.

The squad finishes up its regular season with an away game against Big Lake Feb. 13.
