RC girls seeded No. 2 in playoffs
The Rush City girls basketball squad completed its transformation from a duckling into a swan last week by snatching two more wins out of Great River Conference opponents and finishing the regular season 11-1 at home. Following several seasons with below .500 finishes, the Tigers have proved to be an unbeatable force this year. To cap off a stellar regular season, the team defeated Mora and East Central last week to take third in the conference with a 10-4 record and 17-5 overall. Both games were decided by less than five points. In both games, Rush City was trailing by as many as 14 points before charging back and taking the win. In a 44-43 win against East Central, the Tigers were outscored 12-2 in the first quarter and found themselves behind by 21-14 at the half. The teamís defense kicked it up a notch in the second half, allowing only 7 Eagles points in the third. Rush City matched East Central 15-15 in the third for the one-point victory, giving the Eagles its first conference loss of the season. ìIt was playoff atmosphere tonight and our players really stepped up to the challenge of playing East Central,î Head Coach Stuart Lang said. Mindy Scott led the team with 17 points, including 5 three-pointers. Maria Kuhlman added 13 points and shot 5 for 9. The momentum continued for the Tigers last Thursday, as it hosted Mora and came away with its first win against the Mustangs in more than six seasons. The Tigers were down 9 at the half at 31-22 but narrowed the gap to only one to start the fourth quarter. Rush City outscored Mora 18-13 in the final quarter for the 59-55 win. ìMora is a very talented team, and we really struggled with their size advantage in the first half,î Lang said. ìWe shot very well the second half and got Mora to turn the ball over against the press.î Kuhlman led the team with a career-high 26 points, followed by Scott with 12 points. The wins put Rush City in the No. 2 spot in subsection 1A, Region 4A. The team was scheduled to host Maranatha in the quarterfinal round of playoffs Tuesday. A win would put the Tigers in the semifinals Thursday, Feb. 27.
