Vikings take down three wins
The North Branch wrestling squad added three notches to the win column last week a dual meet and a tri-meet. The Vikings hosted Braham Jan. 28 and defeated the Bombers 42-27. Greg Arnt, at 103, pinned Allen Kelling; Josh Schwab, 112, beat Kyle Tassel 8-4; Jeff Holmgren, 119, beat Brad Hale by technical fall; John Buchanan, 125, beat Omar Bukhowa 8-5; Nat Rundhaug, 140, beat Ashley Sczcech 11-8; Joe Holmgren, 145, pinned Dan Powell; Josh Villella, 152, beat Ernie Loerzel 17-6; Ed Meier, 171, pinned Jake Leclaire and Jarrod Swanson, 215, pinned Jason Neville. ìOur little guys ñ Arnt and Schwab ñ really came out and wrestled well getting two big wins,î said head coach Tony Aho. Although James Kvale, 189, lost his match to senior Tony Bacon, Aho said Kvale hung in until the very end and deserved credit forhis efforts. Joe Lofboom, 125, Cody Gallmeier, 135, Sam Suparat, 160, and Jeremy Bergerson, Hwt., all lost their matches. January came to a close for Vikings when the team hosted Virginia and Princeton for a tri-meet in Vikings territory. The Vikings proved the greater of the competitors and won against both teams. NB 48, Princeton 12 In a thorough romping, the Vikings snagged a victory from the Tigers. North Branch wrestlers won 10 matches, took one forfeit and lost only three matches. Greg Arnt, 103, again showed power and pinned Joe Meinert; Jeff Holmgren, 112, won by forfeit; Josh Schwab, 119, beat Nick Peltier 4-2; John Buchanan, 125, pinned David Malchow; Joe Lofboom, 130, beat Brad Aasen 6-4 in overtime; Josh Villella beat Phil Meinert in a repeat score of 6-4 in overtime; Sam Suparat, 160, brought down a strong win at 9-2 against Evan Pemberton. Luke Keocher pinned Scott Chalupnik in the 171 match and James Kvale, 189, followed suit with a pin on Peter Beck. Jeremy Bergerson added to his wins record by decision over John Hein, 4-2 in overtime. Joe Holmgren, 140, Alex Gerszewski, 152, and Jarrod Swanson, 215, lost their matches. Junior varsity lightweight Chris Newham may be making a place for himself on the varsity squad if he keeps up the good work he showed Friday night. ìHe had an awesome evening, trying many differnt techniques and going undefeated for the night,î Aho said. NB 63, Virginia 15 Five forfeits caused because Virginiaís wrestlers had the flu, worked in favor of the Vikings during the Virginia match. Jeff Holmgren, 103, controlled his opponent well throughout, Aho said. Holmgren won by decision. John Buchanan also had a good outing when he pinned his opponent at 125. Cody Gallmeier, 135, Joe Holmgren, 140, Josh Villella, 145, and Alex Gerszewski, 152, all followed with more pins in their weight classes. Greg Arnt moved to 112 for the match and took a forfeit. Also taking forfeit wins were Joe Lofboom, 130, Sam Suparat, 160, Luke Keocher and Jeremy Bergerson, Hwt. Josh Schwab, 119, Jarrod Swanson, 215, and James Kvale, 189, lost their matches.
