Tiger girls take 2 wins
The Rush City girls basketball team picked up two more wins last week in its successful season, but neither win came in the most important game of the week. The Tigers defeated Maranatha Christian Academy and Grantsburg, but was unable to take down Hinckley-Finlayson for a Great River Conference win. The Jaguars and Tigers shared second place in the GRC before the contest, so Head Coach Stuart Lang and the squad were hoping a win would give them the slot outright. Rush City 32, Hinckley 49 Hinckley-Finlayson came out quickly in the contest Jan. 30, racking up 13 points in the first quarter and allowing only 5 to the Tigers. Rush City battled back to outscore the Jaguars 14-11 in the second quarter after trailing by as much as 11 points. The squad trailed Hinckley 24-19 at halftime. Hinckley took a commanding lead by outscoring Rush City 11-3 in the third quarter but the Tigers did not give up, adding 10 in the final stanza. It was not enough, as Hinckley took the game 49-32. ìWe struggled to match up with Hinckleyís size and athleticism. They out-rebounded us and beat us up and down the floor,î Lang said. Junior Mindy Scott led the Tigers with 13 points, followed by senior Maria Kuhlman with 8, sophomore Holly Grimes with 6 and junior Christine Moore with 5. Rush City 49, Grantsburg 42 Rush City overcame a 10-point deficit at the beginning of the game to defeat Grantsburg 49-42 Jan. 28.
