RC defense beat by Aitkin
The Rush City boys basketball team put together two of its best defensive quarters of the year last week, despite falling to Aitkin 61-39. The Tigers held a 14-10 lead after the first quarter of the Jan. 31 game, but Aitkin took the slight 22-20 edge at the half in a very evenly-matched defensive showing. ìBoth teams played great defense in the half, it was probably our best defensive showing of the year,î head coach Gary Dreissig said. He said the gameís script was the ìTale of Two Halves,î unfortunately, as the Gobblers were able to step up the offense in the second half and the Tigers were unable to stop them. Aitkin outscored the Tigers 21-9 in the third quarter to take a commanding 43-29 lead into the fourth. Rush City stuck with it but was outscored 18-10 in the final stanza for the 61-39 loss. Dreissig said his squadís offense struggled in the half. ìFree throws also hurt us. We were only six of 16 from the charity line and two of 12 in the second half,î he said. Kellin Sybrant led the squadís offense with 9 points, followed by Kyle Mold with 7 and Brett Dreissig and Tim Karnick with 6 each. Senior Joe Prettner and Andrew Kaufmann added four apiece, while Atione Fields had three. The Aitkin contest was the teamís only game last week. This week, the Tiger boys team faces off against the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars at home Thursday, and then get ready to host Maranatha Saturday at home on Saturday.
