Hockey continues to improve

The St. Francis / North Branch girls hockey team suffered a string of losses but Head Coach Joe Fredrickson is seeing improvement in the players with each game.
The squad was shut out 2-0 by Cambridge Jan. 2, although Fredrickson said it was ìa very close battle.î The Bluejackets scored on a power play in the first period, and added its second as an empty net goal late in the third.
It was an identical 2-0 loss again for the team against Spring Lake Park Jan. 4, in which Fredrickson said SPL field a very skilled offensive team, but his squad kept it close. ìOur goalie Doris Summermatter had a tremendous gameñ she was definitely the star,î he said.
The NB / St. Francis team went on to fall 8-1 to Irondale Jan. 7 and 5-2 to 10th-ranked Wright County Jan. 10.
On the J.V. side, the Saints fell 6-1 to Champlain Park, with the lone goal of the game scored by North Branchís Tawnee Henry, and was shut out 2-0 against Spring Lake Park. Other losses came against Irondale (15-0) and Wright County (9-1).
This week, the squad was scheduled to take on Totino Grace Tuesday and travel to Cambridge Friday.
