Vacant NB board seat filled
By Barbara Brown The North Branch School Board last week appointed resident Donna Hubbard as the new board member to fill a seat vacated by former board chairman Rick Olseen. Olseen was elected to the Chisago County Board of Commissioners. The school board interviewed Hubbard and two other applicants on January 14. Hubbard has served on the Early Childhood Family Education advisory council and was an organizer of an adult effort to gain support for three referendum questions that were posted on the November ballots. Hubbard runs a Creative Memories business from her home and volunteers time in the schools. Her seat will be up for election in November. Also at the Jan. 23 meeting, the board voted to expel two North Branch High School students for distributing prescription drugs on campus. Several students who took the drug sought medical attention. The students, who were not identified, were given different expulsion periods due to the circumstances of the cases, which were not detailed at the meeting. Both studentsí parents agreed to the expulsions and waived hearings. At the meeting, the board heard a lengthy presentation from several administrators, teachers and specialists on new and updated programs in the schools as well as updates on programs that are working well like the Alternative Learning Center, Gifted and Talented and a new leadership style for teachers modeled after Sir Ernest Shackletonís style displayed during his daring trip to the Antarctic expedition.
