Businesses are giving generously

To the editor:
We have great news! A recent report by the Building Business Investment in Community (BBIC) project documents that businesses across Minnesota are still very serious about charitable giving, in spite of tight economic times. Over two thirds of our firms gave cash, products or services to various causes in the past year, and the prospects for 2003 giving are quite bright. For more information on the BBIC report, see minnesotabusinessgiving.org.
This commitment reflects the charitable heart of Minnesota and there are many examples, large to small, from which to draw.ÝThe recent passing of Virginia Binger reminded us of the legacy that a large Minnesota corporation like 3M can leave through the creation of a force like The McKnight Foundation.
On a smaller scale, literally every town in Central Minnesota can point to local businesses that are generously donating money, employee time or goods to help people in need in their community.Ý Some have started childcare centers, others are working with the local colleges on work force development and others provide matching funds for local fund drives.ÝMany encourage their workers to serve on local service clubs and community boards.
Why such generosity? Because these entrepreneurs realize that giving back is the right thing to do, and that the benefits go far beyond the bottom line.ÝI m glad I live here, how about you?
