Talk to Rep. Nelson on education
To the editor: During the election, Minnesota voters sent a message to the legislature that they want the Profile of Learning repealed. Representative Pete Nelson answered their call and introduced legislation to do just that. Along with repealing the awful standards, the legislation gives Governor Pawlenty and his new commissioner of education the flexibility needed to replace the Profile with rigorous core academic standards. But Minnesotans should not expect profile backersñespecially in the state Senateñto give up the Profile without a fight. Thatís why they should contact legislators like Representative Nelson and let them know they are doing the right thing. They should also get a hold of legislatures who oppose the repeal and tell them not to stand in the way of improving our childrenís education.
