Peace marches held Friday nights

TO THE EDITOR:
Chisago County residents have been holding a peace vigil at Vilhelm Moberg Park in Chisago City every Friday, from 5 to 6 p.m. since Thanksgiving. Similar demonstrations are taking place all over Minnesota, some sponsored by Women Against Military Madness and others by Veterans for Peace and other peace organizations.
An influential coalition of major U. S. civic, religious and environmental groups, ìWin without war,î have come together to urge the Bush administration not to attack Iraq. The groups include the Sierra Club, the National Council of Churches, Veterans for Peace, Every Church a Peace Church, National Organization of Women, and others. They join with the Lutheran Church, Catholic Church, United Methodist Church, Quakers and other religious groups that have spoken out against a preemptive attack on Iraq.

Opposition to a possible war in Iraq contrasts sharply with the widespread support for U.S. attacks on Afghanistan and is much stronger and earlier than those that spoke out in the early stages of American involvement in Vietnam.
These groups are concerned that a preemptive attack will not only weaken our efforts against terrorism, but may encourage other rogue nations to use terrorism against us or to arm themselves with nuclear and biological weapons to protect themselves against a possible American attack, such as is taking place in North Korea. They also are concerned that it will further weaken our economy, threatening us from within.
To join this vigil just show up on Friday at 5 p.m. To learn more about this vigil contact Delia Jurek at (651) 257-5904 or visit the WAMM Web site at: www.worldwidewamm.org.
